Fair Elections

Betsy is leading by example, running a true grassroots campaign and once again accepting no campaign contributions from corporate PACs. She believes that our democracy should be a government by the people and for the people, as our founders intended. People should have a real voice in electing their leaders, and people of all income levels should be able to participate in government by running for office and having a say in who wins elections.

Unfortunately, Ohio’s extreme partisan gerrymandering has rigged Ohio’s elections in favor of the Republican party, which ultimately harms both parties by encouraging extremism and shutting out voices of moderation. Although voters are almost evenly split between Democrats and Republicans in Ohio, the Republicans hold a supermajority in the Ohio legislature and they hold 75% of Ohio’s seats in Congress. Moreover, the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United has led to a torrent of “dark money” from unknown sources flooding into our elections, which has skewed policy in favor of wealthy special interests.

Betsy believes we must….

  • End gerrymandering and re-draw our congressional and statehouse districts fairly in 2021 after the census so that voters have a real say in who represents them in Columbus and in Washington, D.C.;
  • Stop “pay to play” politics by fixing our broken campaign finance system and curbing the influence of big money;
  • Stop the revolving door of legislators becoming lobbyists;
  • Protect voting rights, be prepared for the impact that COVID-19 may have on our November election, develop a system to allow regular mail-in voting, and institute automatic voter registration so that every eligible voter has access to the ballot box.
